Throwin’ the Houlihan

June 8th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I was just listening to the station and Riders in the Sky’s version of “I Ride an Old Paint,” came on, with its line about being “Off to Montana to throw the Houlihan” and I started wondering what the Houlihan was.

So, with a little help from Google, I found this site: http://www.westernhorseman.com/stories/12272005/ran_20051227006.shtml

The Houlihan is a pretty basic rope shot that every ranch hand should be able to throw out on the range.

That’s all. Houlihans for everyone, on me!

Thank you, I’ve always loved that song and wondered the same.
